I have uninstalled your plugin since it doesn’t work properly together with our theme and WordPress 2.7.1. Though I have removed your plugin and all the files included, the settings on the exceprts still remain -although I haven’t made any changes in my templates. Could it be that your plugin has made any changes in the WP core-files? My front page and my archive pages are in a complete mess, please get back to me as soon as possible. Thanks

Then how come no excerpts are shown, even though I am calling this function? Before I removed the plugin I by mistake pressed “Generate Excerpt even if a post has a custom excerpt attached to it” and this must have changed something in the core settings since I am not able to show any excerpts. And re-installing the plugin and chaning the settings is not working. Any idea?

@ Psyk – I use the FeedBurner FeedSmith plugin myself as well as the Advanced Excerpt, and as you can see they do not conflict.

If your template uses function provided by my plugin, then obviously it will not work after deactivating it. But I suppose you would have had a PHP error then.

I suspect you’re coping with a problem not related to my plugin.

it would be lovely to add a field for custom html that your plugin filters. also it can be useful to replace html. in my example i hide links in the excerpt, but i’d still prefer to highlight these (with an tag).

Many of my readers are unsophisticated web users, and may not recognize that the title is a link that they’re supposed to click. They need an obvious link that says “Click here to read more” or something to that effect.

I notice in your blog that you have a nice graphical button that says “Read the rest.” How did you accomplish that? Can this be encoded somehow into the ellipsis field on the admin page, or would it require a change to the php? In concept, at least, it seems like it shouldn’t be too difficult – if only I knew php…

I use the plug to generate a site wide excerpt of 25 words. On the category pages (using an archive template), I using the following code to change the excerpt length for that page: the_advanced_excerpt(‘length=75&use_words=1&no_custom=1′);
Oddly, every other post is right (using 75 words) starting at the top. Every other post listed is wrong (uses the 25 words) beginning with the 2nd in the list. Here’s a link to what I’m talking about – http://likethedew.com/category/southern_politics/

I just had a quick look at my plugin code and there is something awkward about the no_custom flag in combination with the template tag.
If your site does not use custom excerpts you can try disabling the ‘no custom’ option sitewide and in the template tag and see if that helps.

Meanwhile I have to find time to do some bughunting in my code, but unfortunately I am very busy at the moment. Don’t worry, though, I will no stop maintaining this plugin in the foreseeable future.

You can always add a link to the full article using the_permalink() template tag.

For example, in my homepage template, I use the following:

Related to the Link using the permalink, is there anyway to integrate this into the ellipsis field? Or does wordpress block using PHP in a post that way?

I was using your plugin with the theme Mimbo Pro by prothemedesign.com. After and upgrade from Mimobo guys, your plugin when activated makes my single post page messed. It takes the header information, and makes it into the body of the text and it really looks funny. I am happy to help pay you to help me get this situated, as your plugin is very helpful.

I’m currently setting up the Mimbo theme on my blog and came across the exact same problem @thedurtyversion explained above. And I actually found out what the reason for this is:
It is to be found on line 10 in the header.php file of the Mimbo theme. There the function the_excerpt_rss() is called. Now as I understand this the “Advanced Excerpt” plugin causes this function to echo instead of return its results.
So now you could remove this line from the header.php but then there is no summary of the post content in the header any more (which I guess is used by search engines). So far I have however not found a diferent solution.
Hope that helps and if anyone has a better way to solve this, please let me know…

It appears that the plugin doesn’t strip ‘br’ tags formed as but does handle tags.

Can anyone confirm or debunk this observation. If it is confirmed, can we get a fix any time soon?

I can’t make Advanced Excerpt work in 2.8.4 – the only markup it keeps is a link in the excerpt. Line & paragraph breaks are all gone though – which if you’re trying to post a poem, isn’t very helpful! I’m using a Woo Theme and have asked them for help but would welcome any advice from folk here please?

Hi,
for the read more the solution is very simple:

In the advanced-excerpt.php go to line 131 and replace:

$text = $text . $ellipsis;

with:

$text = $text . $ellipsis . ' ID) .'">Read more';

I would be grateful if you include this enhancement in the next release of your plugin. Of course with the possibility to customise the “Read more” in the plugin options.

Feature request: be able to specify the length of the excerpt in characters but don’t cut the last word in the middle (show it always enterely).
I’ve more control of the desired excerpt lenght with characters but I don’t want to get things like “this is the en…”.

I need some advice. I am using the wonderful Advanced Excerpt Plugin on my blog, but I need the plugin to ignore certain entries.

For example, if I wanted the first entry on my main page to always be featured in full, and the rest to be excerpts with “Read More,” is that possible?

Also, some entries have certain formatting (lists, poems, images and captions,) that don’t really cooperate so well (or need) the excerpt plugin. These are also situations where I will want the entry toignore the plugin call.

Anyway, I’m having a problem with it in that I have an image with caption right at the beginning of the post. Displaying the excerpt using your plug-in also displays the caption + br tag.

Could you maybe fix this so that the caption is not included in the excerpt?

Is there a way to filter out code inserted by other shortcodes – particularly the junk inserted by WP’s insert gallery option? I only just realized this was a problem because most of my posts have enough text before a gallery entry that it is not a problem. I am pretty sure this is impossible, but I just thought I would ask

All of a sudden today your plugin is shoving my right sidebar down to the bottom of the home page and causing the text in the right sidebar to be bold. I think it asked me for an upgrade today when I logged in and I did the upgrade. I know its your plugin causing the problem because I deactivated it and everything was fine. I’m using Hostgator to host my site. Any idea when you might be fixing this please?

Yes, in fact, version 3.1 was released this week. If you just installed the plugin and it’s not working, make sure the settings (Settings -> Excerpt) are applied.

Thanks for writing this plugin. I’m seeing some strange behavior on my site that I can’t figure out. You can see here that excerpts on the first two posts are working correctly, but the third seems to be taking a blockquote from the middle of my post as the excerpt.

I have found a quite insteresting “bug”.

I used the_advanced_excerpt twice on my homepage. First to show the most recent post and second to show the featured post. BUT the second one does show the title and the link correctly, but excerpt content is from a different post. After I put back the wordpress excerpt function, it displayed the correct content again.

Do you know about it?

@ Tom: I am not aware of this bug. The plugin uses WordPress’ get_the_content('') function to fetch the post from ‘The Loop’ (the default way Wordpress delivers posts on a page in order).
This is, in fact, the same way the default excerpt function works when fetching a post.
I’m guessing ‘The Loop’ isn’t working correctly on your parcticular website. It could be a theme problem, it could be a bug in WordPress itself or it could be a bug in my plugin.

@Bas I was looking through google, and I found one possibility, that it could be caused via mod_cache, but couldnt find any other thing. I will look also through the theme code, if there is not a problem.

? for you… I have installed your plugin and the standard excerpt works great. I would, however like to make a certain excerpt longer than the others. I guess this would be considered a custom excerpt. I Have tried hardcoding the “advanced excerpt” method and for some reason it does not work. I am using version 2.9. Here is the page:

@ Jon: The text you can add to any post using the Excerpt field in the post editor is what’s considered a custom excerpt. If you want a different excerpt for a certain post, you can create one there, but make sure the plugin doesn’t ignore them (you can find this option on the plugin’s settings page).
If you want to have a longer excerpt for every post that is displayed on that particular location of you site, you should use the template tag provided by the plugin in your theme.

Hi, the Advanced Excerpt plugin was recommended to me for using HMTL in my wordpress posts. It seems to work for many HTML tags except , and tags. Is there any way I can make sure these function in my posts. They are listed under tags_allowed within the plugin’s PHP file. Is tehre somewhere else I need to make an adjustment? I’m using wordpress 3.0.

Hey Bas: First off great plugin and thank you for releasing it for all of us to use.

I’m having a bit of an issue with how it’s trimming certain tags though. I’m using Wordpress 3.0 with the newest version of your script. My webhost runs php 5.2.13. What’s happening is that wordpress now has a feature that makes it so that when you insert a smiley based character (ie, or etc) it converts it to an actual smiley face via an image. What’s happening is that advanced excerpt is cutting into that img tag even though I have it specified that I am excluding all formatting (I’ve tried excluding just the img tag exclusively as well). What I’m guessing is happening is that your script is running before wordpress has a chance to output the smiley. Is there a way to have your script check if smileys are enabled and then check to make sure that it’s not cutting them off in the end? I’m going to see if there’s a way for wordpress to output them beforehand, but I think that it’s going to be an issue no matter what. If nothing else, this will at least make you aware of the situation.
