		<description>No, the Debian packages are in fact screwed. jEdit is much easier to maintain when installing locally. ;)

If it would work globally, Ubuntu would have had jEdit in their repository.</description>

Installing from a packages should always be preferred, not just because it is a global install and automatically adds a menu entry, but more because this makes it easier to maintain the software you installed on your system. Plus, these are official (as in: from jEdit, not from Ubuntu) packages, not third-party.
The boxes were unchecked by default for me, and checking them only had the effect that a bug that prevented me from properly opening the menus was fixed. 

Anyway, I&#039;m now uninstalling jEdit again (via Synaptic ;) ) because I don&#039;t have this very modern computer like you do. Admittedly, jEdit itself might not run that terribly slow, but it causes everything else to run extremely slow, which is even worse. I&#039;m sticking with &lt;a href=&quot;http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/&quot; rel=&quot;nofollow&quot;&gt;Bluefish&lt;/a&gt; :D
